The Black Keys, Jeff Beck open up Ottawa Bluesfest!
Following a rocking performance at the
Coachella Music Festival in Palm Springs back in April,
The Black Keys played an enchanting set at last nights opening of 15th edition of the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. The Ohio-based duo left the few thousands who turned up to see them perform definitely wanting a whole lot more.
Having never seen them before, my initial impression upon first hearing their music was 70’s rock with a bl…

With just a few hours to go, crews are busy with last minute preparations for the opening of the 15th edition of the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest, which runs to July 19 at Lebreton Flats in Ottawa. What started as a weekend blues event has now turned into a major International festival offering everything from rock, to rap, to alt-punk and almost everything in between.
It is no short undertaking putting on a 12 day, multi-stage festival which boasts over 200 musical acts and entertains an estimated 3…

Founding member of the Nekromantix, Kim Nekroman, has the pedal to the psychobilly metal as he revs one up at the remote Oak Canyon Ranch during the annual Hootenanny located off Santiago Canyon Rd. east of Irvine, Ca. July 4th, 2009.

This year on July 4th
The Hootenanny is going to be a scorcher with the red hot Reverend Horton Heat headlining the show! The long and not to be outdone undercard is just as sweltering with Lee Rocker of Stray Cat fame, rockabilly knock out out freight train The Blasters from Downey, Ca., and East L.A.'s own, incredible, legends in their own time, maestros of the mix, with new album on hand, Los Lobos. Last time I was graced with the crisp hybrid East LA sound of Los Lobos was at E…

Four score and eight years ago, one of the fore fathers of the modern jazz era was born. Dave Brubeck, best known for compositional inventiveness employing uncommon time signatures, is now eighty-eight and still thriving.
It is now just past the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the album Time Out with its immortal hit “Take Five”. The album sold platinum in 1959 and continues to sell, as any record collection – jazz-based or otherwise – would be incomplete without it.
He takes the main s…

Midway through the set, the large black speaker array stage-left became my monolithic overlord.
It spoke stentorianly, in mellotronic clusters and moog-ified squonks, of hidden passageways to our parallel vibrating universe.
A Hofner slide through Junkyard summed-up Radiolarians’ inter-stellar missive.
Medeski Martin and Wood may have been playing their instruments, but the transmission was from elsewhere.
(I’ve since lined the walls and ceiling of my bedroom with tin foil – shiny side out).

New York trio Medeski Martin and Wood – names synonymous with groove and good times – play the main stage of the Toronto Jazz Festival tonight!
For those still not in the know, their music is designed to stimulate the cerebral cortices while simultaneously causing one’s booty to shake. A cross-section of the audience counts equal numbers of toques and hoodies to salt and pepper pony-tails. In the past they’ve incorporated hip-hop elements - including turn-tables - into their music, and over rec…

After the demise of Charlie Parker and before the rise of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins was regarded as the finest saxophonist in jazz. Playing with Miles Davis in the mid 1950’s, Rollins helped define be-bop as we know it today; and now, approaching his eightieth (!) birthday, Sonny is a testament to the fact that great music has rejuvenating power.
And don’t get the idea that age has muted his exuberance. I saw him at the Montreal Jazz Festival three years ago and the performance was full of l…

NXNE got off to a great start this evening with the Arts & Crafts showcase at The Courthouse in Toronto. A & C are a much loved and respected record label as they have been a launching pad for Canadian indie bands that have gone on to national and international success. Broken Social Scene and alumni Feist have been under their umbrella, and tonight anticipation was high as guest list patrons came to hear the company’s newest signings.
Zeus did not disappoint with their Wurlitzer propel…

North By North East - the Canadian version of the extremely successful Austin Texas South By South West festival – is about to take over the music clubs turned all-night drinking establishments in Toronto. Extended liquor licenses will have select bars rockin to the wee hours purveying booze-fuelled fun and gaiety.
Same Problem – Different Festival. Canadian Music Week in March was insane as to the sheer number of bands and venues, and NXNE is no different. With over 500 Canadian and internatio…

Rev. Zicka-funk's Highly Recommended Remedies for Festival Fever
July Edition
Words and Imagery by Brian Zickafoose
To many music aficionados (myself included), the month of July is affectionately dubbed “Festival Month”. With the summer heat in full effect, party-hearties and boogie-mites roll out stacked to the gills with camping gear, tasty grill-ables and cooler loads of choice beverages to quest for the kind of paradise found only in wide-open fields far from the everyday wear and t…

The Blues is about gettin' down to it, and The Doheny Blues Festival is all about the Blues. This year's line up brings the very best in the blues and their roots can be traced all the way back to the Mississippi Delta, as it should be.
The broad stroke of artists who will be stomping it out on the three stages at the festival include the headliner and King of the Blues, Mr. B.B. King himself, the unrivaled John Hammond, red hot Brian Setzer, up and coming slide legend Derek Trucks, Keb Mo, Elvi…

I am currently doing my
essay topics for my doctorate degree. While doing it, I realized something. It’s as if I’m just like any other students – college students to be exact – being so devoted and haggard at the same time doing their thesis papers.
Anyway, I never really intended to pursue further studies. It actually just happened uncontrollably. The next thing I know, I’m here already. Good thing is I never…

Being in college, is no easy endeavors. I know that television series and movies tend to sensationalize and romanticize stuff. You think of going to college as something to look forward to because you get to be far away from the family and learn a lot of things (academic and otherwise), plus the fact that you get to attend all these awesome parties. All of those are true, but what entertainment people seem to be forgetting is showing not just the melodrama but also the scholastic difficulties co…
